As I passed a homeless man yesterday we made eye contact and I smiled and he said, " You are gorgeous!" I said thank you and smiled even bigger. Not everyday that a stranger tells me that I am gorgeous. It's also not everyday that people actually make eye contact and interact with our ever growing homeless population.
I once heard a homeless woman say that the worst part about being homeless was the lack of eye contact. She said that even those who gave her money rarely looked at her. It made her feel less than human and as if she was walking the earth unseen.
Since then I have gone out of my way to make eye contact and smile and let these people know that they are just as human as anyone else and that we do see them and we haven't forgotten about them.
That man paid me a compliment that lifted my spirits in a time when I truly needed it. I walked away smiling thinking about how amazing it is that one small action, one little choice like looking up and smiling at another human being can change a mundane moment into something you might carry with you always. Human connection is an amazing and powerful thing.
